Special Olympics

Rammies Soccer

Rammies soccer is a Chester County Special Olympics soccer team.  It provides an opportunity for children with disabilities in the community to develop physical fitness skills and express courage.  These children can also participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other special Olympic athletes and the community. Through successful experiences in sports, children gain confidence and build a positive self-image that carries over into the classroom, the home and the community. Like all Special Olympics teams, Rammies soccer is a free program offered to all children that qualify. Rammies soccer is operated by future Adapted Physical Educators and takes place at WCU. Each student enrolled in KIN 253 is paired up with an athlete for the season and works with them individually to ensure each athlete receives the quality instruction necessary for positive gains. Rammies is also operated by many student volunteers and unified partners that help to bring the program to such a prestigious level. Rammies Swimming

Rammies swimming is a Chester County Special Olympics swim team. Rammies swimming takes place each spring semester with approximately 20-25 athletes. Rammies swimming is staffed by current APE minors and has a 1:1 athlete to coach ratio.  This personal attention given to each swimmer provides the necessary safety, support and instruction for the athletes to successfully succeed in the sport. The average season consists of approximately 6-8 practices on Sundays and Wednesdays for an hour in which the team works on stroke techniques and endurance in preparation for their meets. Rammies compete in approximately 2-3 meets each season and each athlete will compete in up to 2-4 events at each of those meets. Each year Rammies elects 1-2 athletes to take to the state meet at Penn State University in June!

Rammies Basketball

Rammies Basketball is a Chester County Special Olympics basketball team that serves athletes ages 18 to 21. Rammies basketball is operated by Adapted Physical Education Minors at WCU who serve as coaches and one-on-one assistants. Practices take place each Thursday afternoon for approximately an hour and a half and consist of individual skill training and team strategies. Rammies basketball was established in 2012 and has already seen great strides in becoming a better team and program. In future seasons Rammies hopes to compete at the Kutztown and Penn State University tournaments.
