Camp Abilities is a residential sports weekend serving 20-25 young people who are blind or visually impaired, ages 7 to 18. Participants travel from several states along the east coast to take part in Camp Abilities PA. This Program is sponsored by generous donations from friends, family and numerous local businesses that make this amazing weekend free of charge for all athletes attending. West Chester University proudly provides all facilities, which includes sports fields, swimming pool, gymnasiums and rooms for all athletes and coaches. The APE minor has also teamed up with the Nutrition department who helps prepare all of our meals for the weekend and teach healthy eating and proper nutrition!

The young athletes take part in an epic 3 day, 3 night overnight experience that introduces tandem biking, swimming, beep baseball, goal ball, track and field, team building and adventure climbing activities. These sports and activities teach and encourage all of the campers to be physically active, healthy, and independent.

Thirty five Adapted P.E. minors also benefit from this weekend as a "service learning" experience. But if you look at all the smiles in that photo, I think you'll see the real benefit of the Camp Abilities experience. The WCU students are currently enrolled in the Adapted Physical Education minor and have completed several courses in adapted sports and physical activity. They practice their newly acquired teaching skills while absorbing teaching strategies from veteran adapted sports specialists.
