6. A quick word of advice for future adapted minors or for parents looking for an adapted PE professional.

The best piece of advice that I can give you is to challenge yourself and the students/athletes. You will only be doing yourself and them an injustice if you cut corners or allow them to cut corners. Challenging yourself with realistic but difficult goals will only make you grow as a person, teacher, coach, and parent once you reach those goals. Never stop.

Nicole Ober

1. What were your Majors/Minors?

Health and Physical Education with minors in Adapted Physical Education and Health

2. Are you APENS certified?

Yeah, baby!

3. How has the minor affected you?

I have been shown what is truly important in life and that nothing should be taken for granted. I can undoubtedly say that some of my best memories from WCU involved the minor in some way. Be it the relationships with my peers, professors, or the awesome kids, I have learned so much through all those that have come into my life, and for that I am truly grateful. Because of the minor I have found my passion in life and am currently able to be doing what I love. Every day I have the opportunity to be an advocate for individuals with disabilities and show others what they are indeed able to accomplish. How sweet is that?!

4. Where are you now?

I am working as an Adapted PE teacher within the School District of Lancaster.

5. What are your future goals?

I would love to be able to continue working as an Adapted PE teacher in my district and continue to help the APE program develop and grow further. I want to be an advocate to for APE and help get APE programs taught by CAPE's in more school districts in general. Also, I think it would be awesome to open a fitness facility with somebody for individuals with disabilities outside of school within the area and then expand to other counties.

6. A quick word of advice for future adapted minors or for parents looking for an adapted PE professional.

The term "all or nothing" comes to mind. With this minor, you are going to get out of it what you put into it. If you begin doing things half-heartedly you can expect half-hearted results... and these kids and their parents deserve so much more than that. They are worth every ounce of energy, every drop of sweat, and every inch of your heart that you give of yourself. And believe me, by giving so much you will receive that much more in return.

Frank Hughes

1. What were your Majors/Minors?

My major was Health and Physical Education with a minor in both Health and in Adapted PE.

2. Are you APENS certified?

3. How has the minor affected you?

I felt like I was one step ahead of everyone else who hadn't worked with students who had special abilities. This minor teaches you how to be a leader in the field and become someone who wants to take charge rather than someone who takes orders. I was overly prepared to take on the position as an APE teacher in Delaware.

3. How has the minor affected you?

I have a job :) , which having the minor set me apart from all the other applicants of the position. But the minor has taught me to be more aware of others' needs and how to accommodate for them whether that is physically for PE or even making accommodations in the classroom for health. Having the knowledge of understanding various disabilities (cognitively and physically) can allow you to make adjustments when/where they are needed.

The minor may seem like a lot of work; however, it is totally worth it and rewarding in the end! Stick with it, go to all the places Doc suggests you to you go, go to ARIZONA, get involved in camps, meet people, network...you never know who you may run into or where you will be life after graduation.

My advice for future adapted minors: Your adapted minor experience will change the lives of individuals with disabilities that are not given the same opportunities as others in life. The minor will also create more awareness in our society, provide individuals with disabilities greater independence, and promote self worth.

6. A quick word of advice for future adapted minors or for parents looking for an adapted PE professional.

The best piece of advice I can give is to be open-minded and flexible.

You discover strengths and abilities about yourself and others that you

may not even realize. Dr. Lepore and Dr. Ellis rock. Listen to what they have

to say. Yes, it is hard work, but at the end of your journey at West Chester,

you will realize what great memories and experiences you have had and how

meaningful the time truly was. It will also greatly improve your confidence

in how you and others perceive you.
